Twist, more commonly known as Olivier Gondry, is Michel's older brother. Before directing videos himself, he started out as a visual effects guy, mostly writing proprietary effects software for his younger brother's various projects. He worked first for Buf, then freelanced for Method Studios, before opening effects house Twisted Laboratories in August 2001. He began working with Michel in 1996, and has added his genius to a long list of works, including Daft Punk, Björk, Earthlink, Levi's, BMW, Chemical Brothers, Radiohead, the White Stripes, Fox Sports Network, Kylie Minogue, and Human Nature.

Twist's directorial work, listed below, shares Michel's love of geometrically shifting time and mathematics in general. Many of his pieces use time-slice technology, but he also shows a passion for stop-motion animation.

TWO NEW TWIST ADS

Two new ads for the Twistman: Construction, a slow-motion assembly ad for Audi, and Live. Run., a somewhat brilliant Sugar Water-type ad for Nike Latin America that uses Dean Martin as its musical backdrop. ('boards has alternate links for both.)

OLIVIER'S DAFT PUNK VID

As previously reported here at Director File, Olivier "Twist" Gondry was working on a live video for Daft Punk as part of their upcoming Alive 2007 set documenting their recent techstasy-inducing live tour. Said video, produced by Paranoid US, has now arrived! Check it out here or here.

UPDATE: A Quicktime copy of the clip has been posted at Paranoid.

TWIST'S PROTOTYPES

Twist and new director Lili Delaroque have co-directed a new video for Parisian electro-pop band Prototypes called "Je ne te connais pas". The video follows the trio as they traipse across the pond and tour the US. See it here.

OLIVIER CUTTING & PASTING DAFT PUNK MAGIC

Image courtesy the talented ysa marie.

Olivier Gondry is keeping himself busy in perhaps the coolest way possible. He is currently compiling footage shot at a recent Daft Punk show in Brooklyn by some 250 audience members.

Let me rephrase that. Daft Punk have been putting on the best Goddamn live show on the planet, and Olivier is creating the first video for said tour's live CD, which is being released in late November, according to Billboard.com. The video is for the live version of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (no, not that version) and will feature, as mentioned, footage shot on August 9 in Brooklyn. The CD itself will document Daft Punk's June 14 Paris stop. Says Thomas Bangalter, "We were inspired by the Beastie Boys' 'Awesome, I F***in' Shot That!' and tried to do that in a four-minute video."

UPDATE: In related news, Eight VFX has posted a live clip from a Daft Punk performance of "Around the World/Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." While Olivier has worked with Eight VFX for year or two, they don't list a director for this clip, which wasn't filmed in Brooklyn. (Thanks, Tyler!)

OLIVIER'S THIRD HP AD

First, Olivier explored the world of Vera Wang. Then he animated his younger brother silly. And now fashion model and author Petra Nemcová gets the Twist and Eight VFX treatment in Olivier's third ad for HP.

Airing now on American televisions, the ad shows Petra walking down a busy city street detailing her hectic life and schedule, which includes lots of traveling and looking good. You can watch the ad in Quicktime here or in false widescreen here, then read more about the making of the ad at fxguide.

P.S. The cool dudes at Motionographer put up a high-quality version of Michel's HP ad: Clickie.

OLIVIER'S NEW AD FOR ZUNE

Olivier Gondry has directed another new ad, this time for Microsoft's challenger to the iPod, the Zune. It features a Zunescape (their title) of Zunes, each one "squirting" a new version of MIMS' God-awful track "This is Why I'm Hot" called "This is Why I Rock." The ad is already on mega-blast across MTV, VH1 and BET, and will air for more than a month here in America. For the trivia-minded folk, this is Olivier's first commercial since signing to Paranoid for US commercial representation. Watch the ad here or here.

MICHEL GETS PERSONAL AGAIN

A couple weeks ago, Twist animated Vera Wang's life for HP computers. This time around, Michel becomes three different people in this commercial (new link!) Twist directed for HP and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.

TWIST GOES HP

As previously reported, Michel is to be in an upcoming The Computer is Personal Again ad for HP. While that ad hasn't aired yet, the latest in the series, starring Vera Wang, has. And, as it turns out, the spot was directed by Twist! You can watch Vera's handiwork here (via Stash), or see the entire campaign for her at hp.com/vera.

OLIVIER'S TRAVELS IN JAPAN

PingMag in Tokyo recently published an inspiring interview with Olivier Gondry. In it they photograph and talk with Olivier as he walks around the Eastern part of Tokyo. It's a very good way to conduct a feature interview posted online.

Olivier reveals that he is about to shoot a commercial.. "I'm supposed to shoot a commercial starring Michel soon. So this time, I will be the director and he will be the guy on the screen. I'm a little bit nervous about it, actually but I am pretty sure it will be a good one."

NEW TWIST WORK

Tyler Williams sends us to Eight VFX, which has Twist Gondry's latest work.

His brand-new spot, airing now in America, is a Chevrolet ad called "Fold," in which the scenery folds into itself, a la Mad Magazine and Motion Theory's Beck vid.

Eight VFX also worked on Twist's latest Vines vid, as well as a somewhat nauseating, but technically interesting, American Eagle ad. I've taken the time to update Twist's commercials videography with links to Quicktime files, for your viewing pleasure.

TWIST'S NEW VINES VIDEO

Olivier "Twist" Gondry's latest video is now on the net. Anysound is his third video for The Vines, and it features a claymation version of the band rocking in what looks to be the set from their first Gondry vid. The video recently premiered at YouTube, of all places. I'll update the link when a better version appears online. (Thanks, Bruno.)

ABOUT TWIST'S NEW TOYOTA AD

Twist has a new Toyota Tundra ad on the air, for Saatchi & Saatchi. Entitled Throw it in the Tundra, it features a single shot of a Toyota Tundra as two men load it with work supplies. According to this article, "[t]he men begin their work in short sleeves on a sunny day, but the day quickly becomes rainy, and their attire instantly changes to rain gear. While the men continue working, their clothes change rapidly through the full range of seasons." You can see what I mean by watching it here. The article has more information about the ad's creation.

Oh, and see two more Twist ads here.

Twist, Michel, Fatboy Remix Go-Go's for Nordstrom

From the press release:

"On Monday, November 7, Nordstrom customers will be invited, via email, to download Nordstrom Silverscreen. The broadband media channel, powered by technology from Maven Networks, will premiere a first-ever video remix featuring The Go-Go's Our Lips are Sealed, directed by Olivier Gondry, executive produced by Michel Gondry and with music remixed by Fatboy Slim. In the video, new footage showing women in Nordstrom merchandise is blended with the original Go-Go's footage."

Those of you who aren't on Nordstrom's 2.5 million-strong mailing list can see a less elaborate version of the clip now online. The HD-quality, full-screen downloaded version is apparently clickable. You like that blouse Belinda Carlisle's wearing? Click on it!

This is the first in a monthly remix-video campaign Nordstrom is pioneering. (Coming soon: Culture Club!) The original Go-Go's video was directed by Derek Burbidge.
